Healthy Kids
Healthy Kids is a new community coalition, made up of community volunteers and area churches, who’s mission is to feed the children who participate in the Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program during the school year. During summer months these children often do not have adequate access to nutritious lunches. Granbury ISD has provided summer feeding sites in the past, however, children from low socio-economic families cannot always access these feeding sites due to a lack of transportation.
Healthy Kids has solved the problem of accessibility by setting up feeding sites in neighborhoods which have high concentrations of children enrolled on the Federal Lunch Program. Actually, the program will be open to all kids age 18 and under regardless of socio-economic status.
Beginning on the first day of summer break Healthy Kids provides a nutritious lunches consisting of a hot meal, fruit, cookie and milk to these children. The food is being provided free of charge to Healthy Kids by GISD Food Services and the lunches are distributed Monday through Friday into the various developments and neighborhoods by volunteers from area churches located in the same geographic area as the targeted neighborhoods. Ruth’s Place Oak Trail Shores location is a Healthy Kids feeding site.
Ruth’s Place provides a children’s hour after lunch is served. Children are involved in craft projects, supervised play, guest “speakers”, imagination time, just to name a few. This program runs the entire summer during Healthy Kids.
Breast Screeni
ng Comes to You:
Ruth’s Place is collaborating with Moncrief Cancer Institute and Texas Health Resources to bring fully funded mammograms to women without insurance. You must call 1.800.405.7739 to make an appointment.
The Breast Care Program is aided by a nearly $1 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to help reach uninsured women in Hood, Parker, Johnson, Denton and Wise counties, an area which has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the state.
Patients register for the free screening by calling 1-800-405-7739. They will need to have a Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) performed by a doctor two weeks prior to the screening in the mobile unit. The CBE can be performed by their primary care physician. If they are residents of Hood County who don’t have insurance, they can schedule an appointment with Dr. Bachand at Ruth’s Place.
“Women who take part in this breast screening program should be assured that we will facilitate complete patient navigation for anyone who needs any form of testing or treatment beyond the initial exam,” said Dr. Keith Argenbright, Medical Director at Fort Worth’s Moncrief Cancer Institute.
