Ruth’s Place is collaborating with Moncrief Cancer Institute and Texas Health Resources to bring fully funded mammograms to women without insurance. You must call 1.800.405.7739 to make an appointment. The Breast Care Program is aided by a nearly $1 million grant from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to help reach uninsured women in Hood, Parker, Johnson, Denton and Wise counties, an area which has one of the highest rates of breast cancer in the state. “Women who take part in this breast screening program should be assured that we will facilitate complete patient navigation for anyone who needs any form of testing or treatment beyond the initial exam,” said Dr. Keith Argenbright, Medical Director at Fort Worth’s Moncrief Cancer Institute.

Healthy Kids and Ruth’s Place – a model program

Texas Department of Agriculture Deputy Commissioner Olige visited the Healthy Kids program at Ruth’s Place on Thursday, July 15, 2010. What she saw was a lot of kids eating healthy food and participating in a structured children’s program put on by Ruth’s Place staff. What she said was that this is a program that should be replicated statewide.

Healthy Kids and Ruth’s Place have created a unique model designed to meet the needs of low income families in the Oak Trail Shores neighborhood. Healthy Kids volunteers bring food to the Oak Trail Shores site at Ruth’s Place. Children walk, ride their bikes, or are driven to Ruth’s Place. They get a healthy meal and then stay for the hour long program put on by Ruth’s Place staff members and volunteers. Ruth’s Place has become a place for these children to come, eat, and be loved. Their families are loved. Ruth’s Place is a safe haven and place of hope for these kids and their families. With over 5 weeks of summer left, over 2,000 lunches have been served at Ruth’s Place. That is over 2,000 times that a child did not go hungry.

The Boy and the Starfish (a different ending)

It will make a difference to this one

One day an old man was walking along the beach in the early morning and noticed the tide had washed thousands of starfish up on the shore. Up ahead in the distance he spotted a boy who appeared to be gathering up the starfish and one by one tossing them back into the ocean. He approached the boy and asked him why he spent so much energy doing what seemed to be a waste of time. The boy replied, “If these starfish are left out here like this they will bake in the sun, and by this afternoon they will all be dead.” The old man gazed out as far as he could see and responded, “But, there must be hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish. You can’t possibly rescue all of them. What difference is throwing a few back going to make anyway?” The boy then held up the starfish he had in his hand and replied, “It’s sure going to make a difference to this one!”

I left the boy and went home, deep in thought of what the boy had said. I returned to the beach and spent the rest of the day helping the boy throw starfish in to the sea.

That is what it means to volunteer

Stonewater Church adds new dimension to Children’s Program

Members of Stonewater Church showed up today at Ruth’s Place and not only served lunches to the kids but stayed and played with them. Stonewater members took the kids outside and played sports. What a wonderful sight it was to see these kids playing with such strong male role models. The children did not want playtime to end today. Several of the children asked if we would be having the children’s program after school starts. So, I guess our next goal might have to be an after-school program at Ruth’s Place in Oak Trail Shores. That’s what “making a difference” looks like.

As of today (7/5/10) 1,451 lunches have been distributed at Ruth’s Place. The after lunch play time has been a big hit with the kids. Ronnie Seagroves of “Strong Fathers, Strong Families” wowed the children last Thursday with a demonstration of wind power.

HEALTHY KIDS FREE SUMMER LUNCH

Ruth’s Place is a feeding site for HEALTHY KIDS FREE SUMMER LUNCH Program. Hot meals are distributed at 11:30 am Monday through Friday at our 2723 Maplewood location in Oak Trail Shores.

Seventeen additional feeding sites are available throughout the county. Call Gabriela at 817-579-0169 to find a location near you.

To be eligible a child just needs to show up. Many fun activities are planned for the kids coming for lunch this summer.
